Welcome to Richmond Hill!

Founded in 1987 in Richmond, Virginia, we are an urban monastery praying for the city of Richmond, Virginia, as a residential community, spiritual retreat center, and ecumenical Christian fellowship.

Our mission is to seek God’s transformation of Metropolitan Richmond through prayer, hospitality, racial healing, and spiritual development.

Historic Richmond Garden Tour 2026

We’re so glad you came to visit us on the 2026 Historic Richmond Garden Tour! We hope you will explore this page and consider staying in touch.

If you would like to volunteer in the Richmond Hill garden, email our gardeners at garden@richmondhillva.org. We can always use some help keeping our garden well tended and beautiful!

As an urban monastery praying for the spirit of Richmond, we gather in the chapel on Grace Street at 7:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 5:30 pm every day to pray for the city. These prayer services generally take about 15-20 minutes – all are welcome!

We host a weekly worship service from 5:30 – 6:30 pm on Tuesday evenings in our chapel on Grace Street. The service includes music, prayer for the city, communion, and a sermon. On the second Tuesday of each month, we host a Taize (contemplative) worship service.

We host facilitated day retreats on various topics, including just coming to be. Visit our events page to see our upcoming offerings.

Join us at 6:30 after worship every Tuesday evening for dinner, and 12:30 for community lunch every Thursday. Donations to contribute to these meals are appreciated but not required.

If you are interested in staying connected with everything we’re doing here at Richmond Hill, please consider signing up for our newsletter and following us on social media.

Hundreds of donors sustain our mission each year. Make a gift today.

Richmond Hill offers opportunities for individuals to come and experience a space for rest and renewal. Spend time in our beautiful garden, walk the labyrinth, enjoy stunning city views, or find a quiet corner to meditate, read, or reflect.

  • Drop by for a few hours whenever our office is open: Tuesday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
  • Join us for daily prayer @ 7am, noon, or 5:30pm
  • Be intentional and contact us to reserve a date for a personal day or overnight retreat

We would love to host a group retreat for your community of faith, small group, or workplace. You plan the content and recruit the people and we take care of logistics like room setup, meals, and cleanup so everybody can be fully engaged in the work (and rest) of the retreat without distraction. You can reserve space with us for half-days or full days. We also can provide overnight accommodations.

There is always so much more going on and we welcome you to check out the rest of our site and discover other ways we might support and partner with you and your ministry.

  • A Place for Hope and Nurture

“I think God is calling together a community that will be varied, that will have some residential and nonresidential members and other participants, and that will be generally a place of nurture for many purposes. It will offer a retreat or visiting place for many, opportunities for education and support for ministry, and space for quiet and prayer, counseling and conversation. It will be a residence for people whose ministry is elsewhere, as well as for persons whose primary ministry is at Richmond Hill. It will be Christian, but its participants and supporters will come from from many different churches and their membership, activities, and support of the churches will be enhanced, not lessened, by their experience at Richmond Hill. It will provide support for non-traditional ministries and to persons who have found no church home. It will be a place for hope and nurture.”
    Rev. Ben Campbell
    Pastor Emeritus

Visiting us for the first time or the hundredth time, come to the Main Entrance and be greeted at our hospitality desk by a volunteer or staff member.

Prior to prayer times, the Chapel Entrance is unlocked and you can enter directly into the chapel for the service.
