Walking into the Storm

It was a global crisis that gave birth to the powerful concept of a “Rule of Life.” And it is that same Rule of Life that can teach us how to love our Richmond neighbors during, and after, this global crisis.

Born out of the crisis of the collapsing Roman empire, the idea of a Rule of Life (a communal commitment to certain spiritual rhythms) began as a way to create monastic communities that could see beyond the collapsing world and envision a new world – one remade in the love of Christ.

The Covid-19 pandemic has leveled our world and made monks out of most of us.  In the momentary sickness of pandemic, our deeper and more dangerous cancer of racial tension has been exposed. Perhaps no modern moment, then, is more appropriate for re-examining the concept of the Rule of Life. So consider with us:

  • How might followers of Jesus in Richmond consider the wisdom of the Rule of Life?
  • How might we use it to communally address the unique crises of Richmond’s history?
  • How might Richmond Hill help churches unite in this effort?
  • How might we be the church that walks into our storm?

Justin Whitmel Earley, father and attorney, is the creator of The Common Rule, a program of habits designed to form us in the love of God and neighbor.

All are welcome!
