Richmond Hill

for the spirit of the city

Welcome to Richmond Hill

Founded in 1987 in Richmond, Virginia, Richmond Hill is an ecumenical Christian fellowship and residential community who serve as stewards of an urban retreat center within the setting of a historic monastery. Our Mission is to seek God’s healing of Metropolitan Richmond through prayer, hospitality, racial reconciliation, and spiritual development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rev. Tom Baynham, Associate Pastor for Hospitality, will assist you in scheduling an individual retreat. Please fill out the interest form below. We typically need at least one week lead time, preferably two weeks, particularly for overnight retreats.

Please fill out the Group Retreat Interest Form. Rev. Sheryl Johnson, Interim Associate Pastoral Director, will be in touch to assist you in scheduling a group retreat or event.

The garden is open to the public through all of the seasons. Experience connection with God, nature, and yourself while exploring our contemplative, wild gardens and walking our Chartres-style Labyrinth.

Visit us Tuesday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. If you have questions about visiting the garden feel free to give us a call at 804-783-7903.

Chapel Front7 days a week, 365 days a year, you may join us in the chapel for our Daily Prayer services at 7am, noon, and 5:30pm. The service lasts about 15 minutes.

On Tuesdays, instead of Evening Prayer, we hold Community Worship at 5:30pm followed by a community dinner at 6:30pm. This worship service is also live-streamed on our Facebook page. On Thursday mornings, we serve communion and lead a Lectio Divina scripture reading, so the 7am service lasts about 30 minutes.

For all services, you may enter through the chapel doors facing E. Grace St.

We also have a weekly prayer cycle called Metro Richmond at Prayer intended for churches to use in weekly worship.

We host tours of the Richmond Hill “Transcending Walls” mural and Dwelling of Enslaved Africans. Together, the Wall and Dwelling tell a powerful story — one of reckoning with the history of the land we live on as we imagine a future of justice and peace.

Tours can be scheduled Tuesday – Sunday. Contact Dr. Lauranett Lee, Social Justice Coordinator, at 804-783-7903 or by email for more information or to schedule a tour.

We invite those who are interested in exploring a call to intentional community to learn more about our residential community and then reach out to our co-pastoral directors to begin a discernment process.

We also have several open positions on our staff that are residential (and some that are residency optional) and we invite you to review them and apply if you feel your gifts are a good match.

Richmond Hill is always happy when folks show interest in volunteering. Would you like to help out in the garden or with retreats? Or perhaps the library or front desk? We are looking for both weekly and occasional volunteers (e.g. covering a shift at the front desk every week vs. subbing when a weekly volunteer is out).

Fill out this form to let us know of your interest and we’ll get the right person in touch with you. Be sure to let us know how often you are looking to volunteer. Whether it is once a week or once in a blue moon, we are grateful for the gifts of your time and knowledge.

“Spiritual direction is an interpersonal relationship between director and directee, in which we learn how to grow, live, and love in the spiritual life.” – R. Foster.

Whether you are in need of a spiritual director or would simply like more information, please contact Lydia Mercado via email.

Today is May 12, 2025.
On Mondays we pray for all residents who live in the City of Richmond, the Mayor, City Council, and School Board. We also pray for all non-profit organizations and their ministries. We pray for all schools: students, teachers, and staff. We pray for day care centers. We pray for all who suffer from addiction, dependency, and codependency. We pray for the healing of metropolitan Richmond: for the sick and those on our hearts; for the welfare of all who live here and for the establishment of Your justice and peace in our community.
